Daryl Collins
Project Director

Daryl is a financial economist by background, having started her career as an Emerging Market equity strategist with Lehman Brothers in New York. She moved to South Africa in 1997 to manage domestic and African equity portfolios for institutional clients. Four years ago, she decided to move away from the investment industry to pursue a long-standing interest in understanding the financial management systems of the poor. The Financial Diaries project is the cornerstone of this investigation. She has lectured Finance at the University of Cape Town for the past four years and resides in Cape Town. Louise Taljaard
Database Manager - Cape Town

Louise is the mastermind in charge of managing the post-field Financial Diaries database. This includes the enormous job of cleaning the data, keeping the database operations working and assisting with analysis. Louise was introduced to the Financial Diaries database through her honours project for her Business Science Honours degree which she obtained from the University of Cape Town in 2004. She is currently working on a Masters in Knowledge Management through UCT.

Busi Magazi
Eastern Cape Manager - Lugangeni

Busi is extremely close to earning an MPhil in Social Science Research Methods from the University of Stellenbosch, following on from a B.Soc.Sc. in Social Work from UCT. Busi's qualification as a registered social worker shows in the ease with which she gains trust in the households. The people of Lugangeni clearly adore her, as was apparent when she gave them a presentation of our preliminary work in February. Busi currently holds responsibility for part of the Lugangeni sample as well as the management of the Eastern Cape office.

Zanele Ramuse
Field researcher - Lugangeni

Zanele is a recent addition to the team but has already proven her mettle in facing the physical challenges presented by working in Lugangeni. Zanele has a B.Soc.Sc. degree from University of Natal. She has had extensive fieldwork experience under Professor Kunene, working on the Khoi San population in Eastern Cape. Zanele has most recently worked in the field on an Ebony Consulting project on SMMEs. She currently covers the Lugangeni sample with Busi.

Lwandle Mgidlana
Field researcher - Langa

Lwandle comes to us with a B.Soc.Sc. from UCT as well as a (nearly complete) post-graduate diploma in Human Resource management. Lwandle is our computer genius, having worked for a year with Linux operating systems, translating computer software from English to Xhosa. But his genius also extends to the field where he patiently extracts information from the households in Langa.

Nomthunzi Qubeka
Field researcher - Langa

Nomthunzi is another recent addition to the team. She comes from one of the long-standing Langa families, which pleases our respondents to no end. Nomthunzi is a genius at working her way into respondents' heart - they just look at her and tell all. Nomthunzi comes to us with the brightest recommendation from Development Research Africa. Although Nomthunzi came to us with very little computer experience, she now confidently inputs data at the speed of light. She covers the Langa sample with Lwandle.

Tshifhiwa Muravha
Field researcher - Diepsloot

Tshifhiwa comes to the Financial Diaries team with extensive experience in field research. She obtained not only a BA degree in English and Psychology from the University of Venda but also a BA Honours in Psychology from the same institution. During that time she interviewed rape victims and acquired an acute sensitive that has served us well in the Financial Diaries project. Since graduating she has spent a great deal of time in the field gathering information on a variety of topics. She covers the Diepsloot sample with Abel.

Abel Mongake
Field researcher - Diepsloot

Abel is our malume - he spent a total of 16 years in the field before he joined the team. Abel has been known to work on Sundays trying to get interviews with respondents that are pressed for time. His computer skills are sky-rocketed from not knowing how to hold the mouse to being extremely proficient at inputting his data. He covers the Diepsloot sample with Tshifhiwa.
